When the pieces are held vertically, the one on the left appears shorter than the one on the right. Your audience is now staring at an impossible contradiction. They just saw that both pieces matched — yet now one clearly looks smaller.
That alone is enough to create a memorable moment.

Just when your audience believes they are watching only an optical illusion, the effect takes a surprising turn. In the end, you can now show that one piece is truly shorter than the other.
